Ominous sounding roads.
I drove passed Doomsday Lane today, and wondered if there are any other road names that sound like you may not want to drive down there.
I circumnavigated Britain solely using A-roads. Read about my 3500 mile journey here.

Cill being Irish for church, there is Kill Lane and Kill Avenue here in Dublin and many more examples in Ireland, including the town of Kill.

I did a double take the first time I drove on Slaughterford Road.

Re: Ominous sounding roads.
In Kent there's Death Hill on the A20 near Brand's Hatch, which has since been renamed Gorse Hill. For some reason, I used to confuse it with Wrotham Hill a bit further along.

Having downloaded the OS Locator database to a local SQL server, I can tell you there is one Death Lane

There's three Crashmore Lanes in the UK, and a Kilcrash Lane (I've driven along there - it's near Blackpool)

One of the arms of the roundabout at the NW end of the Beverley bypass is Killingwoldgraves Lane.

Mortal Ash Hill just outside Scunthrope.
Crazy Lane East Sussex.
Doomsday Gardens which is just up the road from the OP's location and sounds like a lovely little cul de sac... by day.

Re: Ominous sounding roads.
I did think that Death Hill was the original name, but I read somewhere* that it was originally Gorse Hill, then was nicknamed Death Hill because of the way bikers would go hell-for-leather down here. If this is true, this nickname would have been appropriated by the highway authority and used to draw attention to the danger here. Does anyone know if this has any truth in it?Ritchie333 wrote:In Kent there's Death Hill on the A20 near Brand's Hatch, which has since been renamed Gorse Hill.
* I think, but am not sure, it may have been that the title of one of the files at the National Archives referred to 'Death Hill (formerly Gorse Hill)'

Aren't there a few streets where 'Gallows' or 'Hangman' make their presence felt?

Please tell me there's also an old people's home there or something . On a related note, there were retirement flats in S London called Purley Gate which didn't sell too well. I expect they've been renamed by now.boing_uk wrote:Doomsday Gardens which is just up the road from the OP's location and sounds like a lovely little cul de sac... by day.

Bloodmill Road here in Limerick. The property developers of housing estates built off it have tried to market it instead as Old Singland Road (Singland is the townland the road runs through).
Re: Ominous sounding roads.
The driver of the Google car clearly had second thoughts as it's the only street in that area not to have streetview.Tom wrote:Please tell me there's also an old people's home there or something . What about Hang Hill Road in Bream, that sounds quite ominous.

Gibbet Lane, between Kinver and Stourbridge.
I seem to remember from a school project I did on local history that the last executed murderer to have their body exhibited on a gibbet was displayed here. The year 1812 sticks in my head for some reason. I don't know whether it was previously a standard site for a gibbet, or whether this particular individual was displayed here for a reason (the scene of the crime was nearby, or something).
