I notice that the next street along is Cloreen Park that appears to be a small business park. Did they change the spelling but keep the same phonetics so as not to put people off going there?FosseWay wrote:My ancestors lived in Chlorine Gardens, Belfast.

Re: Ominous sounding roads.
Quite possibly. Spelling it like that implies an Irish origin to the name, but I think the chemical element is a more likely derivation. The whole area along the Lagan valley to Lisburn was big in the linen trade for centuries (indeed, this is what my ancestors did) and chlorine is an essential ingredient in the bleaching process.Octaviadriver wrote:I notice that the next street along is Cloreen Park that appears to be a small business park. Digging up this topic again because I've found a lovely sounding Break My Neck Lane above Penzance. It's only a track leading to Break My Neck Farm and I wonder how that name came about.

You'd think the sign on the other side of the road would have been vandalised more wittily, surely?NITransport wrote:Not really a road, but a sign which could be ominous to some...

Nothing ominous there. Just means it's a safe Conservative seat.ravenbluemoon wrote:There's "Labour In Vain Hill" on the A4 at Beckhampton, which always seemed a little ominous to me.
Re: Ominous sounding roads.
I know it's not the proper name, but surely 'spaghetti junction' sounds ominous?
Re: Ominous sounding roads.
my mum always calls it cut throat lane, as she remembers a news report about a girl getting her throat slashed down there when she was young (late 60s/70s). whether thats true or she's making it up I don't know.MJN wrote:A 2002 Philips street map of mine falsely shows Cut-Through Lane at University Park in Nottingham as Cut-Throat Lane. anyway, there's a Blind Lane in Breaston, Derbys
Hellebore Close, Nottingham (a Hellebore is a flower used in witchcraft)
