New 40mph D2 opens between A38 and Cribbs Causeway

Post by gepree68 »

A new 40mph dual carriageway, Hayes Way, has opened near Bristol. At its eastern end it connects to the A38 just north of the flyover near Gipsy Patch Lane (B4057). At the western end it connects to the San Andreas roundabout near Cribbs Causeway shopping centre.

Approximate route of new road

Looks a decent bit of road from the drawings - I'd personally have preferred a 24h Clearway than a No Waiting At Any Time restriction as you don't really want to encourage setting down and picking up of passengers on a road like that...

So eventually after 60 odd years Hayes Lane has come full circle. It was originally a lane from Charlton towards Gypsy Patch Lane that got eaten by the airfield.

Harold Shand: "Nothing unusual," he says! Eric's been blown to smithereens, Colin's been carved up, and I've got a bomb in me casino, and you say nothing unusual ?"

Has the airfield closed now ? It seems the route of the road goes through the old northern apron or has it just been reduced in size

That's a surprising name. Is there a Krakatoa roundabout?

Let's hope it was designed properly so it doesn't develop a fault

How many times is Highwood Road going to be relieved ? It was only built in the late 1930s as part of a Bristol bypass, and was fully up to the standards of a major suburban dual carriageway of the times, but was cut in the 1940s by the extension of the "Brabazon runway" at Filton. The M5 to the north, built in the 1960s, was seen as a replacement for this. Now there is yet another new route doing pretty much the same thing.

I'm not too happy about the way it breaks up the GSJ'd section of A38. It would have been better joining the A38 slightly to the south at the GSJ.
How would you like your grade separations, Sir?

Does anyone know if the new road is getting a number? B4057 perhaps?

Also I think the road has been opened earlier than planned, given that the deadline for submitting comments for the consultation is 10 December 2010. I wonder if that makes the 40mph speed limit unenforceable?

If the road has lighting then wouldn't it be 30 by default if the 40 limit is null and void?

They probably had the restriction coming into force in plenty of good time to guard against possible early openings.

Unfortunately, that would have meant going through the Royal Mail depot. Anyway, there are two signalised junctions a little further south of that GSJ so whats another couple

Looking at the diagrams, the A38 junction appears to be a hugely complicated junction with a lots of sets of traffic lights. One route in particular, going from the B4057 Gipsy Patch Lane northwards onto the A38, now involves passing through 3 sets of traffic lights in close succession

A bit of forward planning would have avoided that, the Royal Mail depot has only been there 12-15 years :D .

Drove along the road today (close to peak time for the shopping centre that would have been one of the biggest triggers for building it) and there was minimal congestion, semms to work well enough
