You have to wonder how signs like this get overlooked for replacement? Surely someone from either NH/HE or whatever company has the contract to maintain this stretch of motorway must drive past at some point and think "we really should do something about that"...

I don't know the answer to that, but it really is strange. The M3/M25 ones are faded to the point where they're basically useless; you can barely read them any more even in clear daylight. How anyone responsible for maintaining that road can pass them and think they look fine is beyond me.

I was approaching from the other road, westbound on the A27, but even so it stood out for its mankiness...
I noticed these back in April and was staying at the Premier Inn just around the corner at Port Solent. I tried to get close for a proper pic but didn't quite manage it. Obviously being a motorway, access is nil and void. But i did think these are quite bad for a motorway. You would think HE would have more funds than the local councils to replace signage so they should never get into this state, along with those along the M3/M25. Like Chris has said, surely those on the M3/M25 would be notice by a lot of people including HE, probably more so than the M275 which is at the very extremity of the motorway network.

For the M25 signs, it could be one of those things that's just fallen between the cracks. Maybe it's not regarded as urgent given a few hundred metres back there are alternative signs that provide sufficient lane guidance. Accessing that structure may require a road closure, and there may not be a suitable alternative route.

That's eastbound.

D'oh. West side of the junction. Eastbound traffic. Daft mistake.

Another in the same area. I saw one more that was similar but didn't take a pic as it would have been slightly repetitive; I suspect there are some more around there.

This is a good one with its blue borders, stripy-mank plus the phone sign, the latter of these could maybe qualify for the [getting] Rare[r] Signs thread:

That's a lot of Helvetica on those signs.

Highland Council are, by and large, pretty good at looking after their signage, despite the vast area and the very small overall population, but here's some lovely old blue mank on the A836 North Coast Route that got overlooked :–

. . .Both sides are the same !

Trying to figure out why Aird/Pier signs are double sided, you'd not be able to see the other side until you'd turned onto that road surely? Maybe they've been incorrectly repositioned.
