Re: Manky Signs
Noted at M66 jct 2. obviously being on a motorway slip road i wasn't able to capture myself
Re: Manky Signs
I think these pedestrian signs date from the building of the Wessex Way in the 1970s, and they are still going strong despite being a little faded.

The long straight roads in Charminster were severed near their eastern end, and the remaining stubs of those roads were renamed, such as Lowther Road (long straight) and Lowther Gardens (eastern stub); Portchester Road and Portchester Place; Shelbourne Road and Shelbourne Close, etc.

Spot the bonus addition when the hotel etc were added to the corner of the roundabout.

Re: Manky Signs
Posted this in the FB group. a mixture of old and new at a side road off the A493 at Arthog. My first capture of an old style gradient sign. I think somebody on here alerted me to it. Possibly Kevin Roads? So it was rude not to stop while i was passing the other day.. it's such a tight turn into this road that you would do really well to notice the gradient sign. so well down to whoever spotted it.
The 3t M G W appears to be a new addition in the last few years according to GSV. Also interesting that only 1 NSL roundel has been replaced and one manky one left.

Re: Manky Signs
This one on the A5 near Pentrefoelas is shocking for a major road, and it doesn't even seem to be that old, 11 years max from the Streetview images:

Re: Manky Signs
Not guilty! I haven't seen that before, Rambo, nor been down that way for a while. Good spot, though.
Councils seem to be quite inconsistent when updating or replacing signs: the GSV, as you say, shows the predecessor of the present '3t mgw' was a manky '3T' (vertically aligned, which I think is unusual?) but the other side had already been updated with the newer '3T' that's still there. Why were they not both replaced at the same time?
However, when it was eventually time to replace the old '(vertical)3T' it was decided not to match the sign on the other side....strange.

This was an early way to prevent HGVs before someone sussed out you could just have a lorry in a circle. There were some very weird sign experiments before the 1975 regs settled most of the basics down.Kevin Roads wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 14:33 Very faded and tired, plus the unusual 2 1/2 tons wording.

Ah yes good spot. I notice last week that those along the A55 at the Abergele junction have been replaced with new. I wonder if Welsh highways, or whatever they're called have been looking at this thread..
Re: Manky Signs
An interesting one for Kevin Roads. A blue bordered sign for Drws y Nant station just off the A494 between Bala and Dolgellau. Interestingly the railway (trackbed is just out of shot) closed in 1965 so i guess this must be a very early 'Worboys' sign installed some time in the mid 1960's, although it had aged quite well so you would be forgiven for thinking this was a much newer sign. But i see no reason for it to have been installed later especially with the railway being lifted in the late 60's after the Beeching cuts.
Sadly it has long gone as this was captured in the mid 1990's before the road was upgraded here. I remember that there used to be a set of traffic lights here for years (possibly the longest temp lights ever??) and according to his article they were there for about 20 years! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/special_repo ... 410931.stm
I wonder what ever happened to it. Probably in a skip. I hope somebody saved it. This was captured long before i had any interest in roads or signs.

Re: Manky Signs
Do keep up, Rambo! I posted pretty much the same thing last November - and you replied to it, speculating that councils etc may be reading these posts as an easy way to compile their job lists.
Im being light-hearted, Rambo: it's Friday, so you may have had a hard week. It's also better that we notice signs etc twice - or more - than not at all.
Cheers.

Re: Manky Signs
Thanks for the Drws y Nant info, Rambo. I wonder if the plaque to mark the opening of the new section of A494 is still there? I may have a chance to get down that way on Sunday, there are a couple of things I want to look at that might mean some more pics on here next week.
It was interesting to see the BBC news site from 1999, it was refreshing to read a well-written article which contrasts sharply with the poor standard of so-called journalism today. I also liked that Peter Law, the Assembly Secretary of Transport, gave a clear summary of what happened, no BS or blaming others ("it's priorities...it had to wait") and what the benefits will hopefully be. Again, a contrast to the soundbites, cliches and backstabbing of today.
Right, that's enough thread diversion for today - back to manky signs.

Have you captured this thick blue border further up near the Brithdir turn? https://www.google.com/maps/@52.7668093 ... 312!8i6656Kevin Roads wrote: ↑Fri May 27, 2022 21:57 Thanks for the Drws y Nant info, Rambo. I think you may have posted it before but the thread is getting so long i forget!
I passed it the other week but it was too late to make the turn to get a pic of it so i thought i'd save it for another day.
Re: Manky Signs
Not new content for me but captured a few years ago. There are quite a few of these odd coloured (or probably faded) primary route signs along with blue borders on the east side of Chester around the A41 & A51. Many of them are also starting to crack if you look closely.

I haven't noticed that Llanfachreth sign, Rambo, but I must have passed it a few times. I'll keep an eye out next time I'm down there.
