A9 Kincraig to Dalraddy construction
As this project near completion, here are some photos of the progress so far. (Click on any of the photos for higher resolution in Flickr.)
Starting in September 2015, just prior to the work commencing.
The project signs at the south end, just south of the existing WS2+1.
The existing single carriageway by Kincraig village and one of the permanent speed cameras (which has been removed as part of the work).
There are five structures along the length of the scheme, Dunachton and Allt an Fhearna underpasses accommodate an access and a burn in large concrete structure and are being replaced with similar structures cast in situ.
Baldow Smiddy and Lower Milehead underpasses were buried corrugated tubes with limited clearance and are being replaced with precast concrete structures with full height clearance.
Also a small culvert crosses the Leault Burn.

By now traffic had been switched onto part of the new carriageway, so work could start on removing the existing road.

Re: A9 Kincraig to Dalraddy construction
July 2017
Up to date with photos taken this past weekend.
Traffic is now running on the second carriageway to be built, on the line of the original single carriageway, so the northbound at the north end and the southbound at the south end. Temporary bits on the first carriageway are now being finished off, mainly around the structures where traffic had to be kept to the outer edges to allow the other half to be constructed from the middle.
This is the south end of the dual carriageway
Just north of that the carriageways on on slightly different levels to reduce the size of a rock cut.
Traffic crosses over just north of the Dunachton underpass, the surfacing over the underpass has to be completed where traffic was running on a temporary line while the other half was built.
This is the point where the widening switched side and the bit where the temporary carriageway was has been finished off (the freshest bit of surface)
With the shared use path along side
Looking along the north end
There's still a bit of work to be finished at the underpasses, the water is being pumped though pipes at Allt an Fhearna
The Dunachton Burn is currently flowing though the side where the road will be while the channel for the water is being completed.
The Leault Burn culvert has a bridge alongside it for the shared use path.
The Baldow Smiddy underpass is nearing completion, the small watercourse is behind the concrete wall.
At Lower Milehead the ground still needs to be built up to its final level.
There were numerous accesses directly off the A9 to property to the west of the road which have been closed. So as well as the four upgraded underpasses connecting to the B9152 there are two left-in, left-out junctions on the northbound carriageway.
This is the one at Leault Farm, which connects via a new access road to Dunachton Estate.
The other is at Alvie Estate, which is also served by the Lower Milehead Underpass nearby.

Very nice pictures, Glen! I'll have to plan a trip in that direction to check out the new road at some point later in the year.

Re: A9 Kincraig to Dalraddy construction
The last I heard, which was from a local resident when I was taking photos a few weeks ago, was that the road would be open for the August bank holiday, with works on the local accesses continuing for a bit after that.

Presumably not the Scottish August Bank Holiday? (First Monday in August).

That date was quoted in the middle of June, but it's still two weeks away, so could well be.IAN wrote:Presumably not the Scottish August Bank Holiday? (First Monday in August).
Re: A9 Kincraig to Dalraddy construction
I think they must mean the English bank holiday i.e. 28th August as it looks like there's still quite a lot to do. Yesterday they were planing the WS2+1 south of the scheme to convert it back to S2 presumably. Seems a waste when it will have to be widened again in the near future. Wouldn't it have made more sense to include this section as part of this scheme? Would have needed another structure over the access road to the wildlife park but that's going to have to built at some point anyway.

Re: A9 Kincraig to Dalraddy construction
Heard the other week from someone who works for BEAR that it would resurfaced to adjust the camber and remarked as WS2. Given it was completely planned down today when I came through maybe this is actually happening. Apparently no derogation can be given to allow WS2+1 in 2km of dual carriageway unless terminating on a roundabout, however it could be relined as a standard 2+1.A9Craig wrote:Yesterday they were planing the WS2+1 south of the scheme to convert it back to S2 presumably.
At one of the roadshow events in Tomatin or Carrbridge I attended, the reason the 2+1 section wasn't included was the scheme was in the same limits as a previously proposed alternating WS2+1 upgrade and that as the junction strategy hadn't been worked through at the time there was a remote possibility the Highland Wildlife Park access road could have become a full junction, meaning whatever was done there now needing ripped out again.

Re: A9 Kincraig to Dalraddy construction
The reason this scheme was fast tracked to construction was because the design work for a planned WS2+1 in the same location had been done. Extending it south of the Wildlife Park underpass would have increased the time to get the scheme to the statutory process.
I can't see the existing overtaking lane being left as a 10 m two lane carriageway, that seems like an accident waiting to happen on the A9. It will probably be 7.3 m plus hard strips.

Re: A9 Kincraig to Dalraddy construction
My memory of the planned WS2+1 at Kincraig was that it was much shorter than the current dualling scheme and terminated maybe a couple of miles north of the Wildlife Park access road? If correct then the Southern section had to be designed from scratch anyway.
As for the existing WS2+1 I'm guessing it will be hatched on one side like the Pitlochry North junction was a few years ago. Or maybe they're going to build the world's longest lay-by. All will be revealed in August.
