Yes that's definitely one we need a replacement for! I'm not sure if they were two realistic alternatives or of someone drawing an update onto the map simply got the wrong line!

I appreciate that it would mean more work for people that already have too much to do and not enough help, but if maps are scanned as JPEGs or similar couldn't the additions be edited out in photoshop or similar ?

Having done that before, to fix up maps, it is possible to do, but it's a pain as it's almost impossible to match the rotation, skew, and colours from the second source. It's also possible to zoom in and try and fix minor blemishes, but the addition of entirely new roads on such a large scale - it'd be easier to source a new version of the same map I think...

There are several things to bear in mind here.

That map is on the generic "Seventh Series" layer - i.e. the very first layer that was put together ten years ago (really??) when the Seventh Series had its last sheet dropping out of copyright. Back then we were literally starting from scratch, so we couldn't be particularly picky about the sources on the grounds that we'd always be able to replace them later.

Since I took over looking after Maps, the focus has been on widening the coverage as much as possible in an appropriate manner - hence the explosion in the various annual layers at multiple scales, the addition of OpenData and so on. This has meant that we now have either online or in the pipeline the vast majority of Seventh Series sheets, though ironically one of the few we are missing completely is 103 (Doncaster) Revision A/.

The Seventh Series generic layer is one that therefore hasn't been touched for years, as it contains whatever source we could lay our hands on at the time, and we've never properly worked out what to do with it, which is also why it's missing, say, Shetland or parts of the Scottish east coast. As mentioned above the current thought is to retile the layer with a copy of every sheet that was on sale at a particular date - possibly 1 January 1962. However, to do this, we need georeferenced copies of every map at the right date, and I'm still working on that one. Given that tiling the whole of GB from scratch on that layer is likely to tie up my laptop for a couple of days, I'm sure everyone can understand why I want to do it once and not in iterations.

However, this process is one that could definitely be speeded up with some help - and the help we need for that is not even slightly technical, it's simply being able to click on appropriate grid squares on a scanned map. I'll get to it when I can, but with only one person doing it...

Please shout up, perhaps here, perhaps to me or the President directly by PM if anyone out there is willing to give some of their time.

OK, and onto 1963...

One big batch completing the full coverage of every sheet printed in 1963, which contains:

* Sheet 24 (North Skye) Revision A/
* Sheet 71 (Alnwick) Revision A//*
* Sheet 92 (Pickering) Revision B
* Sheet 93 (Scarborough) Revision B
* Sheet 113 (Lincoln) Revision B
* Sheet 117 (Bala and Welshpool) Revision B
* Sheet 119 (Stafford) Revision B
* Sheet 139 (Cardigan) Revision B//
* Sheet 141 (Brecon) Revision A///
* Sheet 180 (The Solent) Revision A//

(plus of course, all the other sheets we'd already put online...)

There's lots of interesting things spread across these sheets, but I think for me the Stafford sheet is the most interesting of the lot. But then I would say that! :laugh:

What a snapshot of the M6 history on the Stafford sheet. Thanks again for your work in putting them up. Also on the sheet is the A41 Albrighton Bypass under construction. The railway branch line from Trentham almost looks like it morphs into the B5038 at the A34 crossroads :? , until fully expanded.

The Brecon sheet shows the west end of the Abergavenny Bypass as under construction, although it had opened on 3 August 1962. Certainly some time lag from surveying to publishing.

On the Solent sheet is the B3053 Marshwood Bypass for the first time.

And the next batch, this time all on the 1962 One Inch layer are currently uploading:

* Sheet 27 (Strathpeffer) Revision A/
* Sheet 33 (Rhum and part of Skye) Revision A/
* Sheet 34 (South Skye and Arisaig) Revision A/
* Sheet 68 (Biggar, Moffat and Sanquhar) Revision A/
* Sheet 91 (Ripon) Revision B
* Sheet 99 (Hull) Revision B
* Sheet 104 (Gainsborough) Revision B
* Sheet 106 (Anglesey) Revision B
* Sheet 116 (Dolgellau) Revision B
* Sheet 131 (Birmingham) Revision B
* Sheet 169 (Aldershot) Revision A/
* Sheet 171 (London SE) Revision A//
* and new cleaner versions of 8 other sheets from the year (40, 45, 107, 110, 115, 120, 129, 159)

That's now all of those Scottish sheets (plus Birmingham and Dolgellau sheets) fully completed with every revision ever printed, but (shock), we're still missing ONE sheet from 1962, so that year doesn't get the green header row. It's Sheet 29 (Elgin), Revision A/, so if anyone has that in their personal map collections, then please shout!

OK, so Bank Holiday mapping uploaded!

We have the remaining One Inch Seventh Series maps from 1961 now available to enjoy on the 1961 One Inch layer:

* Sheet 35 (Loch Arkaig) Revision A/
* Sheet 57 (Islay) Revision A/
* Sheet 69 (Selkirk) Revision A/
* Sheet 78 (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) Revision B
* Sheet 81 (Dalbeattie) Revision A/
* Sheet 82 (Keswick) Revision A//
* Sheet 102 (Huddersfield) Revision B
* Sheet 105 (Grimsby) Revision B
* Sheet 108 (Denbigh) Revision B
* Sheet 118 (Shrewsbury) Revision C
* Sheet 132 (Coventry and Rugby) Revision B

(and again, a bunch of cleaner copies of other sheets too...)

Amongst others, there's a whole mass of early motorway interest in this lot - what else is there that you can see?

Two maps today, to complete both the 1971 coverage, and every edition of both sheets.

* Sheet 102 (Huddersfield) Revision B/*/*
* Sheet 167 (Salisbury) Revision B

There's some great coverage of the M62 under construction here!

Super work and thanks again.

There's a strange looking truncation of A726 at East Kilbride prior to the completion of Queensway at https://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/maps/ind ... 3&layer=30

That is really wierd, with two A-class roads entering the town on an east-west axis, entirely failing to meet one another, and both just randomly ending! Don't you love New Towns in flux?

Anyway, the rest of the 1959 sheets are now available online:

* Sheet 104 (Gainsborough) Revision A/
* Sheet 107 (Snowdon) Revision A//
* Sheet 114 (Boston and Skegness) Revision A/
* Sheet 141 (Brecon) Revision A//
* Sheet 166 (Frome) Revision A

A special out-of-sequence map upload today.

Thanks to Nwallace scanning this for us on their domestic A4 scanner, we have that one final missing sheet from the 1960s, Sheet 29 (Elgin) Revision A/.

So as of this post, we have every single out-of-copyright Seventh Series sheet published after 1958 available to us right here on SABRE Maps.

So, to carry on from that lot, it's time for maps from 1958!

Specifically, this lot:
* Sheet 19 (Gairloch) Revision A
* Sheet 41 (Braemar) Revision A
* Sheet 49 (Blairgowrie) Revision A
* Sheet 52 (Loch Awe) Revision A/
* Sheet 70 (Jedburgh) Revision A/
* Sheet 82 (Keswick) Revision A/
* Sheet 87 (Isle of Man) Revision A
* Sheet 100 (Liverpool) Revision A/

Anything fun and interesting that people see on these?

The second batch of maps from 1958 have gone "live":

* Sheet 112 (Nottingham) Revision A/
* Sheet 118 (Shrewsbury) Revision B/
* Sheet 125 (Fakenham) Revision A/
* Sheet 126 (Norwich) Revision A/
* Sheet 129 (Ludlow) Revision B/
* Sheet 148 (Saffron Walden) Revision A/
* Sheet 156 (Bristol and Stroud) Revision A/
* Sheet 165 (Weston-super-Mare) Revision A

Don't forget you can find any map we have online on the SABRE Maps Sheetfinder

However, for 1958, we have two sheets missing:
* Sheet 63 (Dunbar) Revision B
* Sheet 103 (Doncaster) Revision A/
Does anyone have copies of these?

Spot the difference is very difficult with this lot, as the next update appears to be in the early 60s for most of them - the marking of the single track A roads as dashed being the main large scale change I've been able to find. There's a couple of factories added here and there in the central belt such as south of Bathgate....
