OS 1:250,000 modern layers

As part of a Happy Christmas to all those of us that love maps (and let's face it, that should be most of us!), there are two entire new map layers being uploaded this evening ready for Christmas Morning.

Thanks to the joy that is OS OpenData, we can bring you two in-copyright layers - the 2010 and 2013 editions of modern OS mapping across the whole of Great Britain at 1:250,000 - the metric equivalent of Quarter Inch maps, which is where you'll find them on SABRE Maps.

Thanks Steven - I tried a bit of a spot the difference between the 2010 and 2013 versions the other day... some differences are there, but very little was built in that time!

The easiest place to spot these things is in Scotland, but there are more minor changes too - Cobham and Gloucester services appearing, for example.

Five months later, the 2017 layer has been added - the 2018 OpenData release is due in June, so we should get that one uploaded fairly soon as well.

There's actually a surprising amount of change from the 2016 layer on there!

It's now June, and as suggested Ordnance Survey have released the 2018 edition of the 1:250,000 scale mapping as OpenData. There's therefore the new layer available on the "Quarter Inch" layer group.

Whilst looking for something else entirely, I discovered that I had a copy of the 2011 release of the 1:250,000 OpenData hidden away. This has now been georeferenced and tiled, and is now available for your enjoyment on SABRE Maps.

There's not huge amounts of difference between it and the 2010 and 2013 layers to either side - but they are there if you look hard enough!


In addition, having had a conversation with OS Customer Services, it would appear that they simply do not hold any copies of older versions of OpenData - they apparently simply overwrite the versions on their servers. If anyone has downloaded or ordered on DVD the "missing" editions (2012, 2014 and 2015), then please get in touch with me so we can get these revisions online and they are preserved for the future.

If you're not sure whether there are any differences between the 2019 and 2020 releases, then I suggest you look in the general direction of Huntingdonshire...

And the 2021 release is now available on SABRE Maps, including roads opened between summer 2020 and summer 2021, for example the Congleton Link Road in Cheshire.

Strange that the A30 south of Carland Cross isn't shown as under construction but the ELOR is...

I can see very few changes from the 2020 layer. There's the new M42 J5a and the link road to the airport. The new town of Houlton near Rugby now has the roundabouts shown on the road running through the development. Other than that and what c2R has mentioned I'm struggling. The A465 dualling still shows the at-grade roundabouts near Gilwern although one has disappeared from the mapping since the 2020 edition. Oh, and the new roundabout on the A449 to the north of Penkridge isn't showing either.
