Re: M11 extension back on the agenda
These were the options in 1993
The solid line was the selected route. For just a simple bypass of Sandy the black route would be the obvious choice just to west of Sandy and the River Ivel between Beeston and Tempsford
Personally I think it should be longer between Lowe Caldecote and Tempsford, the junctions at Beeston and Lower Caldecote are nasty and dangerous.

The proposal I drew up in Merkaartor happens to follow a very similar alignment to the black one of those.KeithW wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 14:45These were the options in 1993

Re: M11 extension back on the agenda
A big problem with upgrading the A1 is that the new realignment at Brampton Hut makes fitting in an offline Buckden bypass tricky, and it seems a complete waste of a lot of money if the improvements at Black Cat aren't utilised (which wouldn't be that hard in an HQD2 upgrade, all the local accesses are removed with the current plan and I'm pretty sure that if it was desired you could build another bridge over the river east of the current ones and use the current southbound carriageway for northbound traffic without huge difficulty)
If Buckden could somehow be bypassed to the east then the new A1 alignment is fine, but then there are flooding issues.

They don’t need to bypass buckden, they just need to remove the roundabout and replace it with a GSJ where there is space further south and connect the roads that go into buckden there. they could also remove all the at-grade turnings and send them to the new gsj.
Re: M11 extension back on the agenda
I disagree, there are some dreadful junctions along with houses and businesses that have direct access to the A1, this is why there is a 50 mph limitfridayy wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 19:25 They don’t need to bypass buckden, they just need to remove the roundabout and replace it with a GSJ where there is space further south and connect the roads that go into buckden there. they could also remove all the at-grade turnings and send them to the new gsj.

Re: M11 extension back on the agenda
Forgot about the houses having direct access. I don’t see them building a hqdc bypass though, unless they decide to make a whole new “A1” between the a507 and brampton hut (which probably isn’t at the top of their priorities.)KeithW wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 22:02I disagree, there are some dreadful junctions along with houses and businesses that have direct access to the A1, this is why there is a 50 mph limitfridayy wrote: ↑Thu Jun 02, 2022 19:25 They don’t need to bypass buckden, they just need to remove the roundabout and replace it with a GSJ where there is space further south and connect the roads that go into buckden there. they could also remove all the at-grade turnings and send them to the new gsj.

Re: M11 extension back on the agenda
That reminds me of looking at a motorway atlas of Britain as a 10 year old in 1999, and thinking the M67 should go to Sheffield. Granted at the time I didn't really know the peaks were in the way, but I learned a few years later that the Sheffield route was the plan all along.
