Think it has to be a contender for the lowest (But has to be the highest value on the individual sign) value.
M6
SCOTLAND
Carlisle 4
No further distance given than 4 miles. Anyone got a lower example than that on a Motorway?
It is, and in my opinion this sign is utterly pointless. Heading northbound, it proceeds J42 for the A6 at which point traffic heading for Carlisle itself will have left the M6. The original sign at that location listed 'Glasgow 98, Edinburgh 101', which in my opinion is rather more useful.
Another one is this sign on the A1(M) south after J57, listing only 'Scotch Corner 4'. Since the majority of traffic will be carrying on south, this sign displaying the name of a junction alone is fairly pointless, 'Wetherby 44, York 50, Leeds 58, Doncaster 79' would be better.

As always, I agree that a list of more important destinations would make sense.
But a thought on why the Scotch Corner listing is there: it's just south of the A66(M) merge, so there will be traffic that has just joined the A1(M) for the multiplex, and will leave at Scotch Corner.
A better place for a longer list would be south of Scotch Corner, where Leeds and Wetherby are listed (even if other useful references like York, Doncaster and Sheffield are not).

Of course, and a few references to destinations along the A66 would be useful in this area too. Signage simply to 'Scotch Corner' and nowhere else begins after the Darlington turnoff at J59 for the A167.
My take on signage between Leeds and Newcastle on the A1(M) is that those cities should be compulsorily signed from one-another, alongside the nearest 2-3 primary destinations, with a similar principle employed on other major axis, for instance the M5 between Birmingham and Bristol.

Technically, that sign cannot be a ‘route confirmation’ sign, because no part of the text confirms which route a driver is on.
With all this discussion of shortest RCS distances, the question of the highest motorway mileage currently signed on the network naturally arises.

A RCS does not need to have a route number on it. It confirms distances along the route you are on regardless of if it has a number or not.

Surely it's 'London 167' on the M5, posted earlier in the thread.

Didn't see that, you're right.

There used to be an RCS in Santa Monica, California, right at the start of Interstate 10, just as you come out of the tunnel eastbound, which gave the distance to Jacksonville Florida, other end of the road, as about 2,500 miles. It's gone now, shame.
On US 20 in Newport, Oregon there's still a 'Boston, MA 3,365 miles' RCS.
I thought about this one, but does it count if it has mileages to other destinations? It’s definitely the highest RC sign for Swanley as the rest were all replaced with ‘(M25)’
In Ireland, I'd be looking for distances to Belfast from Cork, or Derry from Wexford or Waterford, but all of these routes probably go via Dublin so won't be signed.
