And many similar. However in those cases it was decided that the airport/road/reservoir/mine/whatever was required and the road had to be blocked off to accommodate it. In the other examples (including mine) it was decided that the road should be blocked, then something was thought of to block it with.

Since the government in their wisdom (Grant Shapps anyway !) granted money for Low Traffic Neighbourhoods there has been a feeding frenzy of road blocking in London. Not sure about the rest of the country though.

To be precise, in the LTN examples I have seen, the road was only blocked to motorised traffic but was clear for pedestrians and cyclists.

Ah, so obviously there are much fewer totally blocked-off roads. Here's a couple in Macclesfield: -
This one was obviously the road to Prestbury at one time

and this one seems to have copied the Maginot Line !

The former access road from the Tyne Commission Quay to the A187, which was replaced by a partly D2 road in 1993 during the Royal Quays development. The old access road is bollarded off, but beyond the bollards is mostly intact with the seventies street lighting mostly in place. I suppose with the new road being far superior and with much better signposting, the original road was closed off.

Sounds interesting, I don't suppose there is anything visible via GSV of this?

Just a guess, is it Northumberland Dock Road?

Yeah, *only* blocked to private cars, public transport including ring and ride services, taxis and private hire vehicles, police, fire and ambulance, and delivery vehicles, some rather large including removal vans which would find it very hard or impossible to turn round. And good luck getting a cargo bike through the gaps that remain. But pedestrians and solo cyclists can get through, so that's all right then.

This is another road, from East Howdon to Northumberland Dock that used to connect to a shipyard. Since Smith Brothers closed, there has been no use for the road and this has joined the former access road to the Commision Quay. Sort of makes East Howdon even more of a dead end as the place can only be accessed from a roundabout on the A187 and the old A187 terminates on the edge of the village. ( It was by passed in 1994).

A few recent ones here, with some very temporary looking obstructions and signage. All prohibit only motorised vehicles, anything else that will fit is still allowed through.

The first two have removable posts to allow wider vehicles through, but as the No Motor Vehicles signs have no qualifying plates beneath them I can't think what they could be legally used for (stagecoaches perhaps?) Interestingly the No Through Road signs do say Except Cycles.

This one doesn't yet have a post between the planters, so there is nothing to stop cars illegally passing through the gap.

Very local to me, and All Saints Road now has its bollard. To say that they are contentious would be to understate matters.

You used to be able to sneak into the garage to get to the carwash, without having to go all the way around the the Birchley Isand and the three sets of traffic lights.
It looks likely that that wasn't a legal manoeuvre so I'm not surprised those bollards were put in.

My cousin used to live in this road in a south-eastern suburb of London. Looking at the map, I assume the barrier exists to stop rat-runners who were trying to avoid the shopping area of Blackfen Road:

Ah .... now, in Loyeeds thou must never make the assumption that thou can drive up any road that runs parallel to t'other, especially if you have a big car that can be a right handling to turn around!

Here's another:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/WrL1KRJwabiq8ss17

And another:
https://www.google.com/maps/@53.8057432 ... 312!8i6656

D'oh, yet another:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/NzQ7wwKWStJ95dGe8

Of course, I found out about all of those the hard way! One that caused less annoyance (because I was walking) is here:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/GoxwZ2rZndrELgf8A

I should've known, because in Gloucester there's one in the street parallel to the road in which my nan lived:
https://www.google.com/maps/@51.8513161 ... 312!8i6656

And where my mum grew up:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/zqaKKzpvBjTjvnH37

There's one in the village where I grew up too:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/dYXDvq19uMspQDqK9

Down there, they even put them in the countryside:
https://www.google.com/maps/@51.6493662 ... 384!8i8192

This is probably the most spectacular - I drove through it on my driving test, but I'd fail if I tried it on a test now:

There's hundreds in Newcastle literally especially around Heaton and Gosforth to stop rat running but special mention to Mam Tor which I'm sure you'll know about (if not it was abandoned because of landslips) - https://www.google.com/maps/@53.3478442 ... 312!8i6656

Web Tree Avenue in Hereford

Victoria Road in Lydney

Elm Road in Tutshill

Mount Street in Gloucester. This street used to only have access from the A417 but was given a new entrance from Archdeacon Street and was blocked off from the A417 about 12/13 years ago.

Ironmould Lane in Brislington, Bristol used to be passable in the late 80s but you had to be brave (or using someone else's vehicle, in our case) as it was rough as anything. It was a handy shortcut around a busy junction, if you were to try it though but eventually some stout barriers appeared which can't been seen on streetview and I think some vehicle type restriction signs as well
