Roads before and after construction

Re: Roads before and after construction
Still under examination by the Planning Inspectorate until 18 Feb, then there are 3 months to submit a recommendation and 3 months for the minister to make a decision. Assuming a contractor has already been appointed they will then have to start mobilising. So I imagine there won't be much to see before late in the year.
Re: Roads before and after construction
The minister has not managed to make a decision in the 3 month period for any recent scheme. M25/A3 Wisley was before him over a year ago but after multiple extensions there's still no decision. I doubt that the A428 will start this calendar year.

From the A428 scheme website on 23 Nov 2021

The A428 scheme, which proposes a new 10-mile dual carriageway from the Black Cat Roundabout on the A1 through to Caxton Gibbet junction in addition to a number of new junctions and improvements, is currently going through its Development Consent Order (DCO) public examination process. This is a six-month process when a panel of experts from the Planning Inspectorate, known as the Examining Authority, scrutinises the DCO application.
The application remains on track for close of examination in February 2022.

This year we’re expecting our examination to last until February. Later in the year we’re hoping to hear from the Planning Inspectorate on whether they’ll recommend granting permission for the scheme to the Secretary of State. Make sure to follow this page to keep updated.

Re: Roads before and after construction
Thanks, looks like if it were to start construction in 2022 then it would most definitely be at the end of the year or possibly early 2023, also although this scheme is referred to as the A428 improvement the road is due to be numbered as the A421 once it's complete, it looks like it could be late 2025 before the road is open to traffic.

Re: Roads before and after construction
The A428 was only ever going to be temporary number as the original (A45) made no sense after the renumbering of the rest of the road from Felixstowe to Girton as A14.roadphotos wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 18:53 Thanks, looks like if it were to start construction in 2022 then it would most definitely be at the end of the year or possibly early 2023, also although this scheme is referred to as the A428 improvement the road is due to be numbered as the A421 once it's complete, it looks like it could be late 2025 before the road is open to traffic.

Plus A45 was diverted to meet A14 at Thrapston and the road from Higham Ferrers to St Neots renumbered B645.KeithW wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 00:22The A428 was only ever going to be temporary number as the original (A45) made no sense after the renumbering of the rest of the road from Felixstowe to Girton as A14.roadphotos wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 18:53 Thanks, looks like if it were to start construction in 2022 then it would most definitely be at the end of the year or possibly early 2023, also although this scheme is referred to as the A428 improvement the road is due to be numbered as the A421 once it's complete, it looks like it could be late 2025 before the road is open to traffic.

Also the M40 at Aston Rowant (between J5 and J6), the sort of cutting which you could build in the early 70s, but wouldn't get away with a few years later

But that one is ok because it featured in the opening titles of The Vicar of DibleyScratchwood wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 00:06Also the M40 at Aston Rowant (between J5 and J6), the sort of cutting which you could build in the early 70s, but wouldn't get away with a few years later

Re: Roads before and after construction
One gain for locals from the Baldock bypass and tunnel is that there is now a footpath between Baldock and the village of Weston that didn't exist before the bypass was built. This formed part of one of my many walks in 2020.

Sideling Hill cutting on Interstate 68 says hello. It's 100 metres deep, and you'd have thought it would be a tunnel but MURICA!M4Simon wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 10:10But that one is ok because it featured in the opening titles of The Vicar of DibleyScratchwood wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 00:06Also the M40 at Aston Rowant (between J5 and J6), the sort of cutting which you could build in the early 70s, but wouldn't get away with a few years later

Re: Roads before and after construction
Well there was a walkable route along Hatch Lane from the old A505 London Road but it was not very pleasant, especially crossing the road at busy periods. The bigger gain was getting the traffic out of the town and off London Road which was usually either nose to tail or wildly exceeding the speed limit.

Re: Roads before and after construction
Baldock now hosts Balstock, the largest free music festival in Herts which has a main stage in the market area plus smaller stages in pubs so people can check out different acts in various places. That would have been a non-starter before the bypass as the traffic in the High Street and Hitchin Road would have been too much of a barrier to people moving around.KeithW wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 13:56Well there was a walkable route along Hatch Lane from the old A505 London Road but it was not very pleasant, especially crossing the road at busy periods. Another Newcastle one, Denton Square, which was the trolleybus terminus until 1966 and then the bus terminus until 1989, when it was built over by the A69/A1 roundabout on the Newcastle western by pass. Can't find a decent photo of the Denton Roundabout, though.

One of the best 'before & after' photo sites I've seen - well done.
