A meets B, B meets C, C meets D, etc.

Post by TS »

Walking the dog yesterday on Youngs Road and Zamek Close, I tried to think of roads near me where consecutive letters of the alphabet meet.

So, this little game is for you to think of your local area and see if you can come up with a whole string from A to Z, excluding X.

I think, in my area, the only sticking point is J>K, although I would imagine I>J, U>V and Y>Z are likely to be the most difficult.

A few rules:
- The two roads must meet each other and be motorable from one to the other in at least one direction
- Two roads that meet opposite each other at a crossroads can count
- The same road name cannot be used for both links
- Roads starting 'The' count for T and not the initial of the next word.
- Going full-circle with a "Z>A" is not required!

I was going to suggest a radius from home but I realise that people who live rurally might find this a real challenge! So go about it however you please: choose your grandma's house as a base if she lives in a bigger town; widen your area to include your whole postcode area; whatever - it is only a bit of fun!

If you want to be really nerdy, you could try to work out the distance from your home to each one (or total distance to visit each in turn), or you could just try to come up with the closest one for each pairing.

Is this a continuous route? So that in principle you could start on Aandblom Avenue and end up on Zythum Zig-Zag? Have looked at a few local maps and I have struggled to make chains of more than 4 or 5 letters!

Oh, no, it does not have to be continuous! Just any two roads for each example!

I'm amazed you got to 4 or 5. I'll have a think on that locally!

I wonder what the most roads you could travel where each one is further down the alphabet than the last? Could be multiple of the same letter, as long as they were in alphabetical order...

 An esoteric question and  excellent displacement activity. I found 21 out of 25: 8 consecutive from A and 13 consecutive from K. There aren't many roads beginning with I,J,K,Q,U,V,Y and none at all with X, and Zion Lane only meets Attercliffe Road, Lawrence Street, Burgess Street and Church Lane.

A Road > B Road (logical really)
Broomhall Road > Collegiate Crescent
Chesterfield Road > Derbyshire Lane
Denham Road > Ecclesall Road
Endcliffe Vale Road > Fulwood Road
Fitzwalter Road > Granville Road
Graham Road > Hangingwater Road
Horndean Road > Idsworth Road
I>J no
J>K no
Kennedy Road > Linscott Road
Lydgate Lane > Manchester Road
Meersbrook Avenue > Norton Lees Road
Nethergate > Oldfield Road
Osborne Road > Psalter Lane (no idea why the P got added)
Prospect Place > Queen Victoria Road
Queen Mary Road > Raynald Road
Ringinglow Road > Sheephill Road
Shrewsbury Road > Talbot Street
Thorpe House Rise > Upper Albert Road
Upper Valley Road > Valley Road
Ventnor Place > Wolstenholme Road
William Street > eXeter Drive (only slightly cheating as there are none beginning with X)
X>Y no
Y>Z no

X isn't possible, which is presumably why the original question said "excluding X". According to this blog there were at the time of posting no street names in the UK beginning with X. One has since appeared - Xanten Way - but no help for this task as it connects only to Adlam Way and Coberly Drive.

It's been posted before that there's an estate with alphabetical street names - though Q, V, X and Z are skipped. As the roads connect only to the spine road, not to each other, they don't count for this purpose.

Not as nice as yours which only has 1 fail compared to my 4 (or 3 if I'd missed out X).
Perhaps we should start a petition for Xerxes Drive and Xylophone Street?

Jersey

Aubin Lane > Blenheim Street
Brighton Road > Clairvale Road
Clarence Road > Don Road
No D>E
[Route d']Ebenezer > [Rue de la] Font de Colard
[Rue de la] Fontaine > [Rue de la] Grande Vigntaine
[Rue de la] Garenne > [Rue de la] Hauteur
Struggling to find a single road starting with I. The only one has junctions with a C. You can reverse from Hilary Street onto Ingouville Street though. In the future Hilgrove Street will also link onto Rue Ivy Forster, but it hasn't been renamed yet.
No I>J
No J>K
Kensington Street > Lewis Street
Les Chenolles > [Rue] Militaire
[Route du] Marais > [Rue des] Nouettes
[Route du] Noirmont > [Mont du] Ouaisné
[Mont du] Ouaisné > [Chemin de] Portelet
[Route du] Pont Marquet > [Route des] Quennevais
Queen's Avenue > Raleigh Lane
[Ruelle de] Ravoulet > [Grande Route de] St Jean
St Saviour's Road > Tunnell Street
The Parade > Union Street
U>V
Vauxhall Street > Winchester Street

That's as far as I could get as I don't think there are any roads which begin X or Z and very few Ys.

There are quite a few B-Cs in Dover, but I did find an A-B-C amongst them.
