Wooden Road Bridge in Norway Collapses

Post by Bfivethousand »

Tretten Bridge Collapse

An increasing number of road bridges in Scandinavia are being constructed using Glulam (glued laminated timber beams). One of them collapsed over the E6 and a river to the north of Lillehammer today... a bridge of a similar design and material - and crossing the same river and the E6 - collapsed in Sjoa, about 50km north of Tretten, in 2016.

Whether this is down to poor design or incapable material remains to be seen.

Without knowing any specifics, I thought that bridge looked a bit flimsy when I drove past it a few years ago. The river it crosses is heavily affected by glacial run off so at this time of year, it'll be at around maximum flow so I wonder if that affected anything?

Tretten (English: Thirteen) is a weird name for a town as well and will no doubt be drawing lots of superstitious people to say silly things about it.
