A591 Dunmail Raise
can anyone shed light on why the climb up Dunmail from Grasmere is clearly wide enough for 2 lanes but isn't marked this way? Has it ever been properly laid out as a 2+1?
Re: A591 Dunmail Raise
There are before and after photos in the 1980 book "The Lake District - a Century of Conservation" by G. Berry and G. Beard. It does not mention the date of the photos, so could be anytime between the 1971 completion and 1980. It shows a wide uphill lane but with no road markings to split it. There is a car overtaking in the photo but it is having to straddle the centre line. The downhill lane takes up slightly more than one-third of the road. The road layout may have been different on opening, though.
