For the defunct B848 from Laggan to Dalwhinnie, see B848 (Laggan - Dalwhinnie).
The number B848 had been recycled by 1932 and given to a very short link road in the settlement of Fort Augustus at the south-west end of Loch Ness. This link, connected Fort Augustus railway station (now the site of Kilchuimen Academy) to the main A82 road through the village along Station Road. Ironically enough, however, the station was closed to passenger traffic on 1 December 1933, removing the main raison d'être of the route. Subsequent rail movements on the whole ill-fated branch line from Spean Bridge were confined from then until complete closure in 1947 to no more than one weekly coal train, together with some armaments traffic during World War II.
The route of the B848 has been omitted from most maps since the 1970s, although it is still shown on the 1971 OS Quarter Inch sheet. However, the Highland Council still lists the route as extant, despite it being unsigned and serving no useful purpose as a B road.
