Junctions related to the A3029 | |||
A complicated junction between the A4, and A3029 which links to the A370, to the west of Bristol City Centre. It is further confused by the presence of the River Avon and Floating harbour separating the A370 and A4. Immediately to the south, on the A370/A3029 lies the Ashton Gate Junction where the A369 also joins. The junction was built in 1965, and was the first multi-level interchange built in Bristol.
Starting from the south, the A3029 approaches across the Avon Bridge over the River Avon. A limited access junction (southbound traffic cannot leave, as the slip is closed off) then lies on the narrow piece of land between the river and the Floating harbour to the north. A tangle of roads primarily provide access to/from Cumberland Road along the north bank of the Avon (also the route to the SS Great Britain). However, it is also partly a spur of the A3029, crossing the Floating Harbour on the Cumberland Basin Bridge to the east of the main junction, and so meeting the A4 one-way system in Hotwells.
The main A3029 continues north, across the Plimsoll Bridge, a swing bridge over the Floating Harbour. Immediately across the river, both carriageways split to link with the two directions of the A4. This is further complicated by the A4 already having split on its approach to the Hotwells one-way system! Indeed, this seems to mean that the A4-A3029 links are the mainline, and so traffic wishing to stay on the A4 needs to turn off or give way.
The junction was built with all sliproads being 2 lanes. However, in recent years, doubtless for perceived safety benefits, many of the slips have been hatched down to one lane.
