A list of the changes to the road network in Great Britain from 2020 - 2029. Includes road openings and renumberings.

2020 A15 Lincoln Eastern Bypass Lincolnshire The 4.7 mile road from Wragby Road Roundabout to Sleaford Road Roundabout opened on 19 December 2020. It included River Witham Viaduct, consisting of five 50m spans. Contractor was Galliford Try, contract value £72 million, total cost was in excess of £122 million. Single carriageway route, parts with overtaking lanes (S2+1) with almost whole route suitable for online dualling in the future. The B1533 was created as a link between the bypass and the city's B road network. Old A15 become the A607 & A1434.
2020 A272 Billinghurst Spine Road Sussex Hilland road. The 0.7 mile north-eastern bypass from A29 Hilland Roundabout to Coneyhurst Road was opened on 14 December 2020. It had been built by a consortium of housing developer firms.
2020 A327 Arborfield Bypass Berkshire Observer Way opened on 16 November 2020. 1.4 miles between Reading Road and Eversley Road. It included a green bridge and a memorial to the Arborfield Royal Observer Corps who manned a nearby observation post.
2020 A43 Moulton Bypass Northamptonshire The 1.5 mile dual carriageway was opened on 3 February 2020 (with some works continuing until May 2020). The northern section and Sywell Road diversion had opened in early 2018 (per the 3 February 2020 Northampton Chronicle). Contractor was Balfour Beatty.
2020 A49 Wigan : Westwood Way Lancashire The 1.5 mile dual carriageway from Warrington Road to the Poolstock / Chapel Lane junction was opened on 26 June 2020 by David Molyneux, leader of Wigan Borough Council. Contractor was Jones Bros. Civil Engineering UK, cost £20 million. It was the first section of a projected route linking the M6 / M58 to M61.
2020 A451 Kidderminster: Churchfields Link Road Worcestershire Opened on 18 August 2020 providing northbound access from A456 Ringway through to Blackwell Street. Blackwell Street became one-way southbound. Funded by various local enterprise partnerships and housing infrastructure fund.
2020 A6196 Glasshoughton Southern Link Road Yorkshire The 1 mile westwards extension of Whistler Drive from the Whistler Drive Industrial units to A6539 Cutsyke Road North was opened on 30 June 2020. 7.3m single carriageway. Contractor was Tarmac, cost £7.3 million.
2020 A9 Berriedale Caithness Realignment of Berriedale Brae Hairpin with new road alignment. Built by RJ McLeod
2020 - Castle Donington Relief Road Leicestershire The 1.5 mile single carriageway road to the west of the village opened on 14 February 2020. Contractor was Chasetown Civil Engineering. Funded by a consortium of developers.
2020 - Mountain Ash Cross Valley Link Road Glamorgan The extension of the Cwm Cynon Industrial Estate road from A4059 at Newtown to B4275 Miskin Road opened on 16 October 2020. It included a new bridge over the River Cynon. Contractor was a Walters-Sisk joint venture.
2021 A120 Little Hadham Bypass Hertfordshire The 2.4 mile road from Tilekiln Roundabout to Hadham Park Roundabout was opened to traffic on 22 December 2021. The official opening was on 11 December 2021 by Richard Roberts, Hertfordshire County Council leader, and Oliver Heald, MP for North East Hertfordshire. Contractor was GRAHAM, cost £40 million.
2021 A1231 Sunderland : Northern Spire Bridge Link Durham The 1.5 mile dual carriageway from Woodbine Terrace to Deptford Terrace (for Trimdon Street to the City) opened on 3 November 2021. 1 mile was offline. Contractor was Esh Construction, cost £42.5 million. It was phase 3 of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor to connect the City Centre and Port to A19.
2021 A1307 Huntingdon : Views Common Link Road Huntingdonshire The 0.4 mile link from Views Common Roundabout to Hinchingbrooke Park Road opened on 3 September 2021 and allowed traffic from Spittals Interchange to access the town centre via Brampton Road. Archaeological work unearthed the earliest evidence of beer brewing in Britain, dating back to 400 BC.

2021 A361 Chipping Warden Bypass Northamptonshire The 0.6 mile road was opened on 18 June 2021 by Andrea Leadsom, MP for South Northamptonshire. Designed and built by High Speed Two Ltd.. A361 was an approved route for construction traffic. Northamptonshire County Council made a contribution of £2 million. Contractor was originally Dawnus who went into administration shortly after commencement of work. Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd. completed the scheme.
2021 A3259 Monkton Heathfield Western Relief Road Somerset Opened on 26 July 2021. Yallands Hill to Sellicks Road. Built by developer Persimmon, cost £3 million.
2021 A536 Congleton Link Road Cheshire Wolstenholme Elmy Way. The 3.5 mile northern bypass of the town from Sandbach Road to Macclesfield Road opened to traffic on 19 April 2021 (walkers and cyclists on 16 April 2021). Contractor was Graham Construction, cost £90 million.
2021 A5288 Stafford Western Access Route Staffordshire Linking A518 Newport Road to A34 Foregate Street at Madford Retail Park. The final part of the scheme, the viaduct over River Sow, connecting Doxey Road to A34 was reported as completed by the Express and Star on 19 November 2021. Unicorn Way had opened earlier in the year. The Doxey Road bridge and re-alignment had opened by 2 July 2021. The existing Martin Drive and Kingsway was used for the A518 link.
2021 A82 Inverness Inverness-shire Opening of Inverness West Link Phase 2. New swing bridge. Opened 1st July 2021.
2021 A9 Luncarty to Pass of Birnam Perthshire Dualling. Opened 30th August 2021.
2021 - Winnersh Relief Road Berkshire Longdon Road extension completed the relief road and was opened on 10 May 2021 by Malcolm Richards, Wokingham Borough Mayor. Contractor was Balfour Beatty.
2021 - Middle Deal Link Road Kent Albert Road to South Wall Road, Deal. Reported as opened by a 19 October 2021 Kentonline article. Opened by Natalie Elphicke, MP for Deal and Dover. Cost £2.5 million. Funded by Quinn Estates with contributions from the Local Growth Fund and South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP).
2022 A1025 Harlow: Gilden Way to M11 Link Road Hertfordshire The extension of Gilden Way from Marsh Lane to a new M11 J7A was opened to traffic on 10 June 2022. The formal opening event took place on the previous day. The original Gilden Way (formerly B183) was also widened to D3 from the London Road roundabout to Marsh Lane. Contractor was Graham Construction, scheme cost £76 million.
2022 A1307 Huntingdon: Mill Common Link Road Huntingdonshire Opened on 2 June 2022. It linked the former A14 bypass route from the south to Brompton Road and was the last section of the A14 upgrade project.
2022 A355 Beaconsfield Eastern Relief Road Buckinghamshire The road from Maxwell Road to A40 Pyebush Roundabout was fully opened on 5 April 2022. The section south of Minerva Way had been developer built. The section north of Minerva Road had been completed by Buckinghamshire Council on 7 November 2019.
2022 A487 Caernarfon and Bontnewydd Bypass Caernarfonshire The 6 mile road from Goat roundabout to Plas Menai roundabout opened on 19 February 2022. The original opening, planned for the day before, was cancelled due to Storm Eunice. Measures to minimise the environmental impact of the scheme included 170,000 plants, providing around 14 hectares of new native species, woodlands and scrub, as well as over 12.5 miles of new hedgerows. Contractor was a Balfour Beatty / Jones Bros joint venture, cost £139 million.
2022 A4104 Northern Pershore Link Road Worcestershire The 0.3 mile road from Wyre Road to A44 Abbey View Road / Wyre Piddle Bypass opened on 10 September 2022, the day of the accession to the throne of King Charles III. It completed a bypass for Pershore Station Road.
2022 A6120 East Leeds Orbital Road Yorkshire The 4 mile dual carriageway from the Leeds Ring Road at Red Hall Roundabout to M1 J46 Austhorpe Interchange was opened on 22 August 2022 by James Lewis, Leader of Leeds City Council, and Helen Hayden, Executive member for infrastructure and climate. A short section east of Manston Lane Roundabout had opened in 2018 and 2019. It had 8.7 miles of dedicated cycleways, pedestrian, and equestrian pathways. Contractor was Balfour Beatty, cost £126 million.
2022 A6184 South Heywood Link Bypass Lancashire Queen Elizabeth Way (was originally to be named Airbourne Way). The 1.4 mile dual carriageway from the Heywood Distribution Park at Pilsworth Road to M62 J19 Heywood Interchange was opened to traffic on 3 November 2022. The formal launch had been on 1 November 2022 by Mayor of Rochdale, Coun. Ali Ahmed and council leader Neil Emmott. The northern part was an upgrade to part of Hareshill Road. Contractor was John Sisk and Co. Ltd., cost £20 million.
2022 A6211 Gedling Access Road Nottinghamshire Colliery Way was opened on 21 March 2022 to pedestrians and cyclists by Mike Quigley, County Council Chairman. It opened to all traffic on 22 March 2022. 2.4 miles from B684 Mapperley Plains to A612 Trent Valley Road, Burton Joyce. Contractor was Balfour Beatty, cost £49 million.
2022 A77 Maybole Bypass Ayrshire The 3 mile road was opened on 31 January 2022 by Jenny Gilruth, Transport Minister. Contractor was Wills Bros. Civil Engineering, cost £29 million. Many SABRE members were annoyed by the decision to renumber the bypassed A77 as B77.
2022 A832 Slattadale Improvement Ross-shire Phase 2: The 0.45 mile section beside Loch Maree completed the improvement from S1 plus passing places to S2 on the West Coast road between Kinlochewe and Gairloch. The official opening was on 7 October 2022 by Chris Birt, Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh Ward Member. Contractor was Wills Bros. Ltd., contract price £1.4 million.

Haudagain Roundabout Bypass Aberdeenshire The 0.3 mile dual carriageway between North Anderson Drive (A92) and Auchmill Road (A96) was opened on 16 May 2022 by Jenny Gilruth, Transport Minister. Cost £49.5 million.
2022 B3334 Stubbington Bypass Hampshire Daedalus Way. The 2.2 mile road was opened to traffic on 30 May 2022. The official opening, in advance, on 26 May 2022 was by Baroness Vere, Parliamentary Under-secretary of State at the Department for Transport, and Rob Humby, leader of Hampshire County Council. Contractor was BAM Nuttall Ltd., cost £42 million.
2022 B6271 North Northallerton Link Road Yorkshire North Moor Road. The road connecting the Darlington and Stokesley Road was opened on 16 December 2022. Financed by housing developers and a grant from the York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership. Cost £12 million.
2022 - Brough Relief Road Yorkshire Phase 3. Saltgrounds Road / Skillings Lane to Bluebird Way roundabout. The 0.5 mile road opened on 14 March 2022. This completed the scheme to provide access from the Brough South Development, Humber Enterprise Park and BAE Systems to A63 at Welton Road Interchange. Contractor was C R Reynolds, cost £6.5 million. An earlier section was the bridge over the Hull to Doncaster railway line.
2022 - Lyminster Bypass Sussex Phase 1 - The southern section from Santa Monica Way to Worthing Road (A259) was opened on 26 June 2022 by Jill Long, Mayor of Littlehampton. Contractor was Breheny Civil Engineering.
2023 A15 Yaxley Loop Road Huntingdonshire The 1 mile road opened on 23 July 2023. Contractor was Breheny Civil Engineering.
2023 A131 Chelmsford North East Bypass Essex Beaulieu Parkway was fully opened on 30 October 2023 following the opening of Boreham Bridge at A12 Boreham Interchange.
2023 A3822 Forder Valley Link Road Devon Platinum Parkway, connecting William Prance Road / Pintail Way (for A386 Tavistock Road) to Forder Valley Road at B3413 was opened on 28 February 2023. The official opening was to be held later. It included a 140m long bridge over the Bircham Valley of 4 sections. There were no expansion joints or bearings between the sections to reduce maintenance, and it was the longest "integral" bridge in UK. Contractor was Balfour Beatty, cost £52 million. Named after Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the year the road should have opened.
2023 A508 Roade Bypass Northamptonshire The 1.6 mile S2 road was opened on 21 August 2023. Contractor was Winvic Construction. Built as part of the SEGRO Logistic Park scheme.
2023 A523 Poynton Relief Road Cheshire Roy Chadwick Way, from London Road to Chester Road Junction (A555). The 2.2 mile S2 road was opened to cyclists and pedestrians on 3 March 2023 following the official opening, and to all traffic on 6 March 2023. Contractor was Graham, contract price £26.5 million, total cost £53 million. Named after the man who designed the Lancaster Bomber at the AV Roe factory at Woodford. The A555 Manchester Airport Eastern Link Road was used for the northern part of the bypass.
2023 A582 Preston Western Distributor Road Lancashire Edith Rigby Road. The 2.5 mile road from M55 J2 Becconsall Bridge to A583 Lea Interchange was opened on 3 July 2023. It also included the link roads - 2 mile B5467 William Young Way and 0.4 mile B5468 Avice Pimblett Way, although these may have opened earlier. Contractor was Costain, cost £207 million.
2023 A585 Little Singleton Bypass Lancashire Skippool Junction to Windy Harbour Junction (A586). Opened with single lane running in both directions on the dual carriageway on 18 December 2023 (whilst work continued). National Highways reported on 4 March 2024 that it was fully open to traffic. Forecast cost £162 million.
2023 A5010 Etruria Valley Link Road Staffordshire The 0.75 mile road from A500 Wolstanton Junction to Festival Park was opened on 23 January 2023. Contractor was Balfour Beatty, cost £43 million.
2023 A602 Watton at Stone to Tonwell Improvement Hertfordshire The upgraded road including a re-aligned section between Heath Mount School and Stoneyhills was opened on 7 August 2023. Previous work included improving roundabouts and junctions. Contractor was Tilbury Douglas.
2023 A9 Perth: Cross Tay Link Road Perthshire Dual carriageway re-alignment to the north of River Almond in advance of the Link Road Works. Opened on 3 August 2023. Contractor was BAM Nuttall.
2023 A9294 Perth: Cross Tay Link Road Perthshire The section of New Kingsway from Stormontfield Road to A93 Isla Road was opened on 2 October 2023 per The Courier. Contractor was BAM Nuttall.
2024 A487 Machynlleth: New Dyfi Bridge Montgomeryshire • Merionethshire The bridge and 0.75 mile road crossing the Afon Dyfi flood plain was opened on 2 February 2024. It is S2 with a 2.5m wide shared use path. Contractor was Griffiths. Anticipated cost was £46 million.
