Common Plates  : Nature of hazard

The "other danger" warning sign warns of various types of hazards that are not covered by specific diagrammatic or worded warning sings.

Pre Worboys Sign

Some of the types of hazard listed may have been warned of by worded pre-Worboys signs.

Worboys Report Sign

The sign introduced in 1964 to warn of various types of hazard that don't have specific symbols is a warning triangle with an exclamation mark symbol (!) (TSRGD reference number 562), it should always be used with a plate giving the nature of the hazard (TSRGD ref 563).

The permitted options for the text on this plate as per TSRGD 2002 are as follows:

  • Ambulance station
  • Blasting
  • Blind summit
  • Census
  • Dust cloud
  • Fallen tree
  • Fire station
  • Frost damage
  • Hidden dip
  • Overhead cable repairs
  • Pedestrians crossing
  • Road liable to flooding
  • Runners in road
  • Smoke
  • Walkers in road

Other non-prescribed variants are often used, these would require site-specific authorisation from the department acting for the relevant secretary of state. One of the most frequent uses in addition to the prescribed list of plates is to warn of wild animals which don't have a specific pictorial sign, such as red squirrels, pheasants, otters or goats.
