Sign RUS 021 (pedestrianised street), has – as its official name implies – a slightly different meaning from UK sign 617 (no vehicles), despite the two signs being near-identical in appearance. The Irish sign, like the British one, indicates that vehicular traffic is prohibited in both directions, but its use appears to be confined to the demarcation of pedestrianised zones in urban areas. It must always be accompanied by a supplementary plate (P052) bearing the legend Ceantar Coisithe PEDESTRIAN ZONE and an indication of the periods of operation and any exemptions,
