The A1049 serves the Headland area of the Durham town of Hartlepool.
The road starts at a roundabout in West View on the northern edge of Hartlepool, where it meets the A179 and A1086 (although originally it started on the old route of the A179 in the middle of Hart, over a mile to the west). The road heads east along West View Road, bending to the right and running parallel to a railway line embankment, which shields it from the sea.
Eventually the line goes over the road and we reenter a residential area. Soon afterwards we TOTSO left on meeting the A1048 and enter the Headland area of Hartlepool. We follow Northgate before the route ends without ceremony on an unclassified road in the town square.
