This article is about the original A1055 from Laverick Hall to South Shields.
For the current A1055 along the Lea between Tottenham and Enfield, see A1055.

In the original 1922 road numbering, the A1055 number was allocated to a route in South Shields.
It started on the A184 at Laverick Hall, to the east of Heworth, and ran northeast via Monkton to end on the A185 near the Tyne Dock, between Jarrow and South Shields.
With the building of the Tyne Tunnel the road layout in the area changed completely and the number was made redundant. The ex-A1055 is now part of the A194; that road has been heavily upgraded but still more-or-less follows the old route of the A1055.
