The original A1096 ran along the Acle Straight between Acle and Great Yarmouth, and was formed around 1st April, 1927, by upgrading the B1140 which ran along this route.
The road was a short-cut to the A47 which also connected Acle and Great Yarmouth albeit by a longer route to the north via Filby. As such, the A1096 was renumbered as part of the A47 in 1935.
