The A2040 is a short link road in Eastbourne. It forms the signposted route through the town for A259 traffic as that road goes through the town centre. Originally part of the B2072, the road gained its current number in the 1960s.
The road starts at traffic lights on the A259 Upperton Road and heads northeastwards along The Avenue, a dead-straight tree-lined road passing several grand suburban villas (and some more modern and more utilitarian buildings).
Presently the road reaches the former Princess Alice Hospital and bears right along Upper Avenue to skirt the grounds. After crossing a roundabout the road splits, with the left fork forcing traffic northwards along the A2021 out of town. Continuing ahead leads to that road at a mini-roundabout slightly further east; turning right here takes traffic back to the A259.
