Originally the A27 ended on the A26 in Brighton. In the 1950s the former was extended east along the latter and the stub left behind was renumbered A2073.
The road started on the A27 at its original eastern end in the Moulscoomb area of town. It headed southwestwards along Lewes Road and then Richmond Terrace to end on the A23 by St Peter's Church.
The road later became a spur of the A27. When that road was moved onto the northern bypass it was renumbered A270 - and so the ex-A2073 is a spur of that road instead.
