The A294 number was not part of the original 1922 allocation, but was created on 1st April, 1924, by upgrading the B2143 from Bognor Regis to Chichester to Class I status.
By the 1930s, the A259 had been extended from Worthing to Bognor to meet the A294, and consequently it was renumbered as a further extension of the A259 as part of the 1935 Road numbering revision.
