The A2 is the second longest motorway in Slovenia and together with the A1 it makes a motorway cross across the country. Internationally it connects Slovenia to southern Austria via the Austrian A11 which continues indirectly to Salzburg and Germany. On the southern end of the A2 it continues into Croatia as the A3.

The modern day A2 essentially follows the Slovene section of the Brotherhood and Unity Highway which was a major arterial route through former Yugoslavia starting in northern Slovenia, passing Ljubjuana, Zagreb then turning south near Belgrade into southern North Macedonia. It was built mainly an S2 route constructed throughout the 1950s and 1960s however due to heavy traffic volumes it was notoriously dangerous. Motorway upgrades were carried out by the individual states which emerged from the breakup of Yugoslavia. Some sections of the original road are still in use including one on the A2 around 20km east of Ljubljana.
