Route
The A4178 is a route skirting the southwest edge of Watford town centre.
The road begins at a junction with the A4125 in Oxhey and heads north, running along the edge of Oxhey Park with trees either side. The trees stop and the road crosses the Colne. After passing Watford Grammar School for Girls, we enter a small one-way system around a small pedestrianised shopping area on Vicarage Road, which forms a junction with the A4145. North of there, the road is lined with terraced houses.
After the junction with Upton Road (a link to the A411 Watford ring road) the road becomes dual carriageway and opens out for a sliproad - or, as it's Watford, "UNDERPASS" - to fork off and head to the northbound A412. The road ends at a T-junction with the southbound A412.
History
The road was unclassified until the 1970s. It seems that the A4178 was classified at the same time as the A4125 and A4145: probably when the A412 was upgraded, and the ring road created.
