The A4301 is a short A-road on the edge of Gloucester city centre.
The road starts on the Westgate Gyratory on the A417 and heads south along The Quay, alongside the River Severn. Soon the docks are met and the road bends to the left to go round them. We follow Commercial Road into a shared space (with a 20 mph speed limit) by the courts as we bear right onto Southgate Street – although actually remaining on the line of the road and not turning off by mistake is difficult.
We now head south along Southgate Street, which is the original line of the A38. We pass the historic dockyard before continuing along a typical road on the edge of a city centre, with shops giving way to housing. It's not long before we reach traffic lights on the A430 southern relief road, onto which we can't turn right. Ahead is the B4072.
