A46/Newark Bypass Improvements

The Newark Northern Bypass improvement is a planned upgrade to the Newark northern bypass. The bypass was originally constructed as a single carriageway bypass with at-grade junctions. By the 2000s, this had become under capacity as a result of other improvements to the A46 and development in the area.
The 2020 consultation proposed upgrading the route to dual carriageway, with at-grade terminal roundabouts to the scheme at Farndon and Winthorpe. Two options were presented for the Cattle Market Roundabout, an at-grade hamburger junction, and a grade separated roundabout interchange, with the A46 being carried over the top.
The consultation also proposed two slightly different arrangements at Winthorpe Interchange.
A number of options had been rejected prior to the consultation, such as full grade separation through, the construction of a high specification southern bypass, as well as other offline construction to the north.
