The A5055, in common with the adjacent road numbers, runs eastwards from the Liverpool docks towards the north of the city.
It starts on the A5036 near Huskisson Dock and heads east along Sandhills Lane, crossing the A565 at traffic lights and passing Sandhills station en route. It ends shortly afterwards on the A5038.
