A637 Gawber - Grange Moor

Route

The A637 is a relatively short albeit primary A-road in southern Yorkshire.

Gawber – Grange Moor

The road begins at a roundabout with the A635 a couple of miles to the north of Barnsley. We begin as a 40MPH S2 with primary status that we keep for all our length, passing a number of car dealers on the right-hand side of the road. We turn right at a mini-roundabout where we meet the B6428 and shortly afterwards see our speed reduced to 30MPH as we enter Darton. We cross over the M1 about 100 yards away from the original course of this road. After we cross the motorway we lose our 30MPH restriction, gain NSL status but narrow considerably. The road bends to the right and begins to climb uphill. We crest the hill and then drop downhill on a recently improved section of road before we arrive at a large roundabout, which is the M1's Junction 38. The roads do not cross here meaning that southbound traffic on the A637 has to pass all four motorway sliproads to continue along the road.

We continue straight on, now on a very short stretch of D2, just long enough to get past a lorry before the road narrows again to S2. We pass the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton on our left before we enter the village, now under 30MPH restriction. A sharp S-bend in the village requires careful negotiation. We leave the village and gain NSL status and another short length of D2 before we arrive at a roundabout with the A636. We go straight on, now on a narrow undulating 40MPH S2.

Flockton WMC

We pass a Young Offenders Institution on the right before entering Flockton and its 30MPH zone. We pass through the village that requires especially careful driving with narrow streets, schools and zebra crossings throughout. A signal-controlled section has recently been installed on extremely narrow section of road that used to be a priority section. We leave Flockton behind and also the 30MPH zone becoming a 50MPH instead. For our last section we climb uphill to Grange Moor Roundabout where the A642 comes in from Huddersfield and Wakefield. At this point, the A637 ends. This final roundabout is a pretty recent development, replacing a pretty hairy crossroads.
