The A982 number was originally assigned to Telford Road in Edinburgh, which opened on 4 January 1929. At the time it was a wide road segregated from housing, although the expansion of the city means that this is no longer true, which cut the corner between the A90 in Blackhall/Drylaw and the A902 at what is now Crewe Toll. The route therefore bypassed a section of Ferry Road, which remained the A902 for many years. However, Ferry Road crosses a weak bridge over the old railway line to Granton, which is now subject to a 7.5T weight limit, and so it was downgraded in the 1970s to become the B9085. The A902 was therefore re-routed onto Telford Road to maintain its link to the A90, taking over the entire route of the former A982 in the process. The A982 number was later reused at completely the other end of the A90 in Peterhead.
