Abercynon Roundabout is the first at-grade roundabout on the A470 Cardiff - Merthyr dual carriageway, mainly serving the upper Taff Valley at Merthyr Vale and the Cynon Valley to Aberdare.

History

Original plan for the junction

It was originally planned as a Roundabout interchange in the 1960s but by the time it opened in 1985 it was downgraded to a roundabout.

The junction opened from the south on 20 June 1985 per the Land Compensation Act notice. The section northwards opened on 4 November 1985.
