Dublin Airport is a major airport, positioned north of Dublin. Since the early 2000s it has grown fast, but continues to rely on road connections.

When the airport was first built, the vehicle entrance was to the south, known as Collinstown Lane. By 1969 this had become extremely congested and was regarded as an embarrassment. Plans had been drawn up to expand the airport and provide a fully free-flowing link to the new airport motorway, but that was delayed by bureaucracy.

As a temporary measure, a new entrance to the airport on Corballis Road South was opened on 1 December 1969. The new junction had traffic lights, which meant it was already significantly more modern than the old route. Signposts were erected and the airport remains a major signposted destination around the city to this day.

This arrangement lasted until the motorway eventually opened in 1985, when a large new roundabout was built at Corballis Road North. One of the arguments used in favour of Dublin getting an urban motorway network was that it would allow bus and coach services to the airport to be improved significantly. The failure to complete the airport motorway is one reason that this didn't really happen until the 2000s.

At the other end of the runway, the R108 has been diverted considerably to take in the various expansions at the airport. This is known as the Perimeter Road or, more unofficially, "the back of the airport".
