Angel is a junction to the south of Islington. It is where the A1 meets the London Inner Ring Road. It appears on the London Monopoly board.
History
In 1963 a major upgrade of the junction was planned which would have seen it transformed into a roundabout with an underpass for the A501.
By 1964 the proposed M11 extension from Hackney Wick Interchange was planned to reach the Angel and a higher capacity junction was required. This would have been on three levels with a flyover for the A501 and an underpass for the A1 together with an elevated structure to the east of the roundabout carrying the M11 extension over the A501. This proposal lasted a couple of years until a revised route for the M11 was agreed on in 1967. No plan of the 1967 layout is known to exist.
The M11 extension was abandoned by the 1970s so a downgraded junction was planned similar to the original 1963 design. This would be built in two stages with the underpass being added later when traffic levels justified it. An alternative was to widen the existing traffic light junction to provide additional lanes on each approach. This, along with the roundabout, would result in the demolition of surrounding buildings. These plans lingered onto into the late 1970s before disappearing for good.
