The present Athlone Bridge was built by Thomas Rhodes, a cousin of the more famous Cecil Rhodes, to replace an earlier bridge constructed in the 16th century. Originally it had a movable section, but this was decommissioned in the early 20th century. Construction started in 1841 and the bridge was opened to traffic on 9 November 1844.
