The original route of the B1197 was a short road in east Lincolnshire.
It started at Ulceby Cross, where it met the A16 and A1028, and headed roughly east. It passed no places of note (and few buildings) before it entered Alford after about three miles. It ran the length of the High Street before ending on the B1196 by the church.
In the early 1920s it was decided that Mablethorpe needed a Class I road, so the A1104 was created. This ran along the full length of the B1197, freeing up the number for use nearby.
