The B1277 is an urban B-road running south of Hartlepool. Originally it was a short link between the A179 and A689 but it has been extended at both ends.
Route
The northern end of the B1277 is at the western end of the B1376; there are no other classified roads here. The B1277 heads south along the former A179 Raby Road before reaching its original northern end as it bends and becomes York Road. It continues south through the centre of town before reaching a roundabout marking its original southern end.
In the 1920s, the B1277 was extended south of here following a brief multiplex with the A689 along Stockton Road. That road has now been rerouted so this section of Stockton Road is now the B1277. When we lose Stockton Road the B1277 continues along Brenda Road to meet what is now the A689 at a roundabout before crossing an industrial estate to meet the B1276 at a roundabout.
Now industrial rather than residential, the B1277 crosses the Durham Coast railway line and another industrial estate before ending at a roundabout on the A178.
History
The southern extensions were built in two parts. The 1 mile section from Stockton Road (original A689) to B1276 Seaton Lane opened on 6 May 1924. The 1.45 mile further extension from B1276 Seaton Lane to the A178 Port Clarence road was formerly opened on 9 November 1927 by Alderman Hyde, Mayor. Width was 50 feet with provision for extension to 80 feet. Total cost of the two sections was £70,503.
