For the original B1309 between West Jesmond and Newcastle upon Tyne, see B1309 (Jesmond).
The B1309 is a short link road in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre.
The road starts at traffic lights on the B1307 opposite the Civic Centre on St Marys Place, then heads south along John Dobson Street. Just before the road goes under the Bewick Court tower block a set of traffic lights is reached and the B1309 TOTSOs left along Durant Road. A short distance further on the road ends at a roundabout on the A167(M), which is also the western end of the A193.
College Street, which runs between St Marys Place and Durant Street parallel to the route described above, is shown as the B1309 on some maps. Newcastle City Council's road list shows this was not the case as of April 2015.
Since the summer of 2015, access by private cars from St Marys Place to John Dobson Street has been banned.
History
John Dobson Street was originally D2. During 2015, the most northerly section of the road was de-dualled, and work is ongoing as of March 2016 to de-dual the remainder. The purpose of the work is to improve the route for cyclists and pedestrians.
