The B170 is a secondary route between Belfast and Bangor. It was originally unclassified but gained its number in the late 1920s.
The road starts at traffic lights on the B505 (former A2) Holywood Road in the Strandtown area of the city and heads east along Belmont Road. The road is lined with shops to begin with but becomes residential after a couple of blocks. We then pass Belmont Tower, formerly a primary school and now owned by the National Trust. Continuing east we soon cross the A55 at a roundabout.
After skirting the grounds of Campbell College there's a short, final residential section before the road enters open country. We climb, initially with Stormont behind the trees on the right. The road takes some time to level out. It continues across the fields and shortly reaches a T-junction. There's a TOTSO right here, then left shortly afterwards at another T-junction. The road then passes through a wood before descending past a golf course. Here the road bears left and continues north past the Clandeboye Estate. We pass through a tunnel above which runs an estate track. The road soon ends at traffic lights on the A2.
