The B2054 is a loop off the A255 in Ramsgate, linking the town with the harbour.
Route
It starts on the A255 Nethercourt Hill in the Chilton area of town. Its original route was along Chilton Road but in 1935 it was shortened to its current route of London Road. Old and new routes combine before the B2054 turns right at a roundabout and zigzags past St Augustine's Abbey, designed by Pugin and now a Catholic retreat centre.
After a few hundred yards, the B2054 comes into sight of the harbour and follows the promenade from here into the holiday resort part of town. Eventually it TOTSOs left and heads inland along Victoria Road to end at a set of traffic lights on the A255 Boundary Road, where that road has to TOTSO.
History
The original route into Ramsgate from the west was through St. Lawrence. A more direct route was provided by London Road, described at the time as a boulevard and arterial road. This 1.75 mile road from Canterbury Road to Grange Road was opened on 8 February 1923 by the Mayor and Mayoress. Width was 80 feet with a 35 foot carriageway. The east end of Pegwell Road was widened. Cost was £19,501 plus £1,940 for sewerage. Initially it was unclassified before becoming the west end of B2054 in 1935.
