For the original B2055 in Sandwich, see B2055 (Sandwich).
The B2055 is a short B-road in Margate. The road follows part of the original route of the B2052, although it had been declassified by the 1950s. The B2055 had come to the area by 1990.
The road starts at a gyratory on the A255 and heads north along Churchfields through the town centre. Traffic lights are reached in Cecil Square where a spur of the B2055 is marked on some maps to reach the A254 by the coast. The mainline continues north along Hawley Street before bearing right into the southern side of Trinity Square. A short distance further on we reach Aldi, where things get confusing. According to the Ordnance Survey there is a spur of the B2055 one block further on whilst the mainline TOTSOs left into Zion Place to end on the B2051 coast road. Other maps don't mark the spur, or continue it along the full length of Northdown Road to reach the B2051 in Northdown.
History
The DfT Card Index from c2002 states that the B2055 is 'In use at Ramsgate.'. As far as can be ascertained, the B2055 has never been applied to a route in Ramsgate, and yet it seems unlikely that Margate would have been considered to be part of Ramsgate. The only possible location for the B2055 number to have been applied to a B road in Ramsgate, based on the mapping so far identified, is for the former B2054 spur along Harbour Road, however, this seems to have always been a spur of the B2054. Failing that, it is also just possible that the B2055 number was briefly applied to a former stretch of A road in the town centre, before it became unclassified.
