|Route outline (key)|
The number B2072 was allocated at some time between 1924 and 1927 to a local road in Eastbourne which allowed traffic to go from the A22 to the A259 without passing through the town centre. It is one of the first instances of a road number being "recycled" – it had been allocated earlier to a route in Ashford.
The construction / upgrade of King's Ride in the 1930s meant that the eastern section of road was reclassified as the A2021. The remainder of the route was upgraded to 'A' road status some time after 1950, becoming the A2040; this remains the case today.
