For the original use of the number, now A245 in Woking, see B384 (Surrey).
The out-of-zone number B384 was allocated by Birmingham City Council to the former A38 in Selly Oak. This was due to the Department for Transport having a stern word about the B38 number for the bypassed section of A38 through Selly Oak, so BCC picked a new number and patched it. The patches added to signs have the whole new number on, so an in-zone number could have been created for the same amount of money.
It is unknown what the DfT think of this new number.
The road starts at the northern end of the Selly Oak bypass at traffic lights by Tesco and heads southwestwards along the old line of the A38, Bristol Road. After going under the Cross City Line and over the Worcester & Birmingham Canal the bypass ends at the Selly Oak Triangle, with southbound A38 traffic having to TOTSO in to rejoin the old road. Northbound traffic leaves one block further on, on the A4040.
