The former B4160 ran along Lower Stafford Street from Elephant & Castle to Five Ways, just outside Wolverhampton city centre. It formed a link between the A460 and A449, and formed an alternative route northwards out of the eastern side of the city centre.
The route became part of the A459 in the mid-1960s, when Dudley Street, the original route of the A459, was pedestrianised; the re-routing then followed the then-B4158 from Snow Hill to Princes Square and then the A460 to Elephant & Castle before taking over the route of the B4160.
The former route of the B4160 is now part of the A449: that road's original route along Waterloo Road is now unclassified.
