|Route outline (key)|
The B4224 is a long rural B-road linking Hereford with the Forest of Dean.
It starts on the A438 on the edge of Hereford city centre and heads southeast along Eign Road, soon going under the Welsh Marches Line. It then follows the River Wye downstream (the river itself is not particularly visible) as far as the next village, Hampton Bishop, before crossing the River Lugg into Mordiford. There are actually two bridges here – both are S1 but the first seems to be much older.
The River Wye is met again and the B4399 from south Hereford comes in from the west and crosses the river immediately before joining the B4224. Our road then goes through Fownhope and climbs via Crossway to a summit near Yatton Wood. At Old Gore the B4225 heads off to the right towards the A449 before the B4224 crosses the A-road itself shortly afterwards.
After crossing a stream the B4224 climbs Crow Hill where it meets the B4221. From a map it would seem as if the junction is a simple crossroads. However, southbound B4224 traffic moves seamlessly into the eastbound B4221 (and vice versa) and all other movements require a TOTSO. The B4224, therefore, TOTSOs right and descends to go under the M50. It then goes through Bromsash to meet the A40 on the edge of Lea.
There is a short multiplex through this part of Lea (although the A40 takes the B4224's direction for the multiplex), after which the B4224 meets the B4222 and reaches the edge of the Forest of Dean. After entering Gloucestershire it reaches Mitcheldean. It TOTSOs right in the industrial area to the north of town before running south along the High Street to end at a mini-roundabout on the A4136.
