The B4249 is described in the 1922 Road Lists as Loop at Abertillery.
The A4044 (later A467) was the main north-south road, following Gladstone Street and Somerset Street. The B4249 was a loop off this, along Oak Street and Castle Street before turning along King Street to meet the A-road again.
The B4249 had the advantage over the A467 of being shorter and wider as well as serving the station.
The A467 now bypasses Abertillery largely along the route of the old railway line and so its original route through the town has been declassified and the B4249 with it.
