The direct road between Pontarddulais and Ammanford in east Carmarthenshire was originally given the number B4301. It was soon upgraded to A-road status as part of the A4138.
In 1935, the road was renumbered as part of an extended A483. The southernmost section of the ex-B4301 was bypassed when a link road was built to the new M4, so this is now part of the B4297.
