The original route of the B4356 ran along the border between England and Wales near Presteigne.
It started on the B4355 to the south of town and headed roughly westwards. Although it started and ended in Wales, it entered England on two separate occasions en route, thus crossing the border four times, and indeed spent more time in that country. The road finally ended on the A44 in Walton.
In 1935, the road was renumbered as a rerouting of the B4362, which it remains.
